My name is Miss Hoefer, and I am a middle school math teacher. I teach because I love to learn and I love to share that with others. Math was my worst subject in school and, about halfway through my undergraduate work, I decided I didn't want to pass my weakness on to my students. I took more and harder math classes than were required and almost accidentally became a math teacher. I have found mathematics to be creative and flexible--an idea that is not widely held but is gaining attention with Growth Mindset research.
I believe that people who consistently challenge themselves to become better over time make the world a better place to live: I strive to be that kind of a person, and I hope to inspire my students to develop the same attitude about both their intellectual, social, and emotional development. My primary rules for myself and for my students is to be kind and to be honest: Intellect must be married to kindness for the world to be livable, and because dishonesty prevents necessary growth, it is never kind.
